    This course provides an overview of Medicaid Administrative Claiming (MAC) as presented by Morgan Casey. Learners will gain a clear understanding of what MAC is, why it plays a critical role in supporting services, and how it will be implemented by Disability Access Points beginning July 1, 2026. The session highlights key concepts and practical applications to help staff prepare for upcoming changes.

  • Overview of MAC Codes 1 and 2 for ADRC Navigators Working Within Disability Access Points

    This course features Morgan Casey from Iowa HHS presenting an overview of MAC Codes 1 and 2 for ADRC Navigators. Learners will gain a clear understanding of each code, when and how to apply them, and how accurate coding supports Medicaid Administrative Claiming. The session provides practical guidance to help navigators confidently document their work and ensure compliance with MAC requirements.

  • Overview of MAC Codes 3 Through 7 for ADRC Navigators Working Within Disability Access Points

    This course features Morgan Casey from Iowa HHS reviewing MAC Codes 3–7 for Iowa ADRC Navigators working within the Disability Access Points. Learners will build an understanding of each code, including when and how to apply them in daily work. The session emphasizes accurate documentation practices and how proper use of these codes supports effective Medicaid Administrative Claiming and program compliance.

    This course outlines the essential aspects of a general or financial power of attorney. This course provides the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively utilize a general or financial power of attorney, ensuring your interests are protected and your
    wishes are respected.

    Intended Audience

    Anyone who is interested in learning more about the general (financial) power of attorney. This includes individuals considering signing a power of attorney and individuals named as an agent in a power of attorney. It also includes healthcare professionals,
    aging and disability service providers, social workers, financial professionals, and others who encounter general (financial) powers of attorney in their work.

    Course Objectives

    During this course, we will:

    • Define what a general or financial power of attorney is,
    • List the advantages of having a power of attorney,
    • Review what decisions an agent can make,
    • Describe how an agent makes decisions, and
    • Identify how a power of attorney can be revoked.

    Welcome to Youth Mental Health for Community Health Workers!

    Overview

    Are you currently working as a CHW or in a similar health related field and would like additional training? The goal of this training is to educate CHWs and other front-line health workers to equip them with foundational community and youth mental health knowledge and available resources to utilize when working with individuals. This is a free, online training that you will take at your own pace. Once you complete all of the modules, you will receive a certificate recognizing that you have completed the Youth Mental Health for CHWs. The series includes two modules.

    1. Foundations of Community Mental Health
    2. Youth Mental Health, Positive Youth Development, and Mental Health Resources

    The Youth Mental Health for Community Health Workers offers an introduction to mental health and youth mental health.

    Intended Audience

    Community Health Workers or those fulfilling a community health worker role.

    Pre-requisites/Learning Level

    Ability to read and understand spoken English.

    CHATO Review

    Goal

    The goal of this communication course is to increase awareness of the importance of effective communication with older adults and to use effective communication between staff and residents in nursing homes and other health care settings.

    Intended Audience

    The intended audience for this course is staff at nursing home facilities, independent and assistive living, and health care settings in the community that include registered nurses, nursing assistants, nursing home dieticians, direct care professionals, other administrations and support employees.

    Length

    The total program is approximately three hours and 15 minutes, split into three modules and the evaluation. Each module is approximately an hour, depending on the individual user. The evaluation is approximately 15 minutes. Upon completion of all three modules, the evaluation, and 70 percent on a posttest, a certificate of completion (three nursing contact hours) will be awarded.

    Content

    There are three modules in this course:

    • Module 1
      • This course contains information on the importance, benefits, and components of effective communication.
    • Module 2
      • This course contains information on some communication barriers and challenges, and effective and ineffective communication strategies.
    • Module 3
      • This course contains information on common problems during communication, guidelines for improving communication, and some characteristics of affirming communication.

    Learning Objectives

    After completing the CHATO program, participants will:

    1. Identify the importance of communication in nursing care of older adults.

    2. Identify barriers to communication in care of older adults.

    3. Distinguish effective and ineffective communication strategies.

    4. Identify elderspeak and its negative effects.

    5. Revise communication to reduce elderspeak and increase person-centered messages.

    Module 1

    Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:

    • Recognize the importance of communication to older adults.
    • Identify barriers to communication in care of older adults.
    • Distinguish between effective and ineffective communication strategies.

    • Critique communication in video recordings of nursing home staff-resident communication.
    • Rewrite transcripts to reduce elderspeak and ineffective communication. 

    The course content was presented by Dr. Kristine Williams (Dr. Williams’ Bio). There are learning activities, discussion forums, list of resources, posttest, and evaluations at the end of the course. The practice activities were designed to provide you with opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills presented in the course. Please take part in the discussion forum to share your experience and reflect on others.

    This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by the Midwest Multistate Division, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

    This training offers community health workers (CHWs) a basic understanding of what Medicare is and how it works. It is provided by the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) at the State of Iowa Insurance Division. SHIIP provides free Medicare counseling for Iowans and is supported by federal funds from the Administration for Community Living. 

    Intended Audience

    Community Health Workers or those fulfilling a community health worker role.

    Ability to read and understand spoken English.

    The goal of this training is to describe what Medicare is, how it works including parts of Medicare, Medicare choices, eligibility, and enrollment.
